Nunavik police report calls for a 'distinctly Inuit system' with changes to hiring laws and training

Regional authorities requested an audit in May 2025 after several fatal police-involved shootings in the region. The report focuses on pathways to boost Inuit representation in policing and allow Nunavik authorities to have greater control over its services.
Justice Jane Kelly stated that 73-year-old Eva Samonas, the primary caregiver for 96-year-old Vasiliki Atanasovksi, had a legal duty to her mother that she failed to perform.
