Britain’s political upheaval exposed a simple reality: Defence spending without fiscal credibility is a political liability. Canada has bought itself time by revealing few details of its long-term plans. That changes this fall, when Ottawa must finally show Canadians how its NATO ambitions will be financed.
Amid the confusion over precisely what deal Canada struck with the U.S. to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick has weighed in on social media with his own calculations. “The USA struck a great deal with respect to the Gordie Howe Bridge,” he wrote in a social media post on Saturday. “Before this deal we got NOTHING. Now, the U.S. gets 50% of net revenues until 2041 and a say in setting the tolls.
