Ottawa Now - ByWard Market Square merchants calling on City Council to reverse course on Market Square plans

A group of merchants in the ByWard Market have banded together, calling on the City of Ottawa to backtrack its redevelopment plans for 55 ByWard Market Square. Nearly every single business inside Ottawa’s historic Downtown building has signed a petition, fearing that this blueprint could lead to the eventual evictions of all 17 food and craft businesses – some of which have been operating in that sector for decades. WestJet has already begun parking its aircraft ahead of a possible strike by its flight attendants on Sunday. Because the airline has not yet reached a deal with the union representing its cabin crew, parking the planes “minimizes the risk of stranding guests and aircraft,” the airline said in a news release Friday.
