Compensation fund for victims of lawyers can cover more than just financial loss: ruling

In 2025, the Law Society of Ontario denied compensation to a victim client of a criminal defence lawyer who sexually exploited her, defamed her online and threatened to kill her. Now a court has issued a ruling that opens the door for victims of dishonest lawyers to be compensated for the loss of their sexual integrity — not just the loss of misappropriated money.

A Canadian man who has been wanted since 1991 for allegedly sexually assaulting a child has been arrested by ICE in the United States after 30 years on the run. Charles Peter Billone, 64, was arrested in Santa Cruz, Calif., earlier this month.
