SIU no longer investigates most off-duty sex assault complaints. Advocates fear fewer people will come forward

The number of police-involved sexual assault complaints reviewed by the Special Investigations Unit has been declining since 2021, data analyzed by CBC News shows. Researchers say changes to the Ontario police watchdog’s investigative mandate may be behind the decline and advocates warn it could result in fewer people reporting police-involved sexual assaults to law enforcement.
