Ottawa Now - Despite a recent drop in car thefts, 8-in-10 Canadians feel their vehicles remain a magnet for car thieves

July 21, 2026

A new survey shows that 8-in-10 Canadians feel their vehicles are vulnerable to theft, despite a recent drop in car thefts nationwide. Data from Angus Reid and Équité Association reveals that, while thefts did decrease in 2025, thieves are using advanced technology to bypass standard security systems. One of those tools is a ‘key fob relay attack’. Experts say that a takedown in modern organized crime requires high-tech prevention, and most Canadians are calling on the feds to mandate stronger anti-theft technology in all new vehicles.
