Ottawa Now - How to mentally manage decisions that are beyond your control

August 25, 2026

It’s completely natural to feel dread over geopolitical decisions that we can’t directly control. That is, unless, you’re a member of the federal government or the Prime Minister himself. And while we collectively have some buying power over what’s happening, we can’t magically fix international trade deals or dictate foreign policy. And then, of course, U.S. President Trump trumpets the Trumpian narratives that we’ve all heard before. He’ll hit Canada with 50% Auto tariffs on New Year’s Day. He will change Lake Ontario to Lake America. He will make Canada the 51st State. It never seems to end. All of that, stockpiled at once, can create a feeling of helplessness. It can hike up your anxiety levels to new heights. But how can you cut through the negative baloney and avoid being consumed in the art of doomscrolling? Benslyne Avril, a licensed psychotherapist practicing in Westboro, offers some of her helpful pointers to CFRA's Chris Holski.
