If we want to build a sustainable City then redeveloping Carling Ave., a street that desperately needs to be revitalized, is a perfect candidate for Light Rail, in my mind. Just like St. Claire was in Toronto.
The Byron-Richmond line will divide the communities that surround Richmond because its not wide enough and cuts through their middle. No one wants Light Rail running through Westboro.
Carling on the other hand will unite and service the communities that flank it on either side. The Parkway is out and the City needs to move on. I remember former Ward 9: Knoxdale-Merivale Councillor Gord Hunter telling the City this over and over again.
Carling is BY FAR the right choice if you understand that such a large investment can not be a one trick poney. Why are consultants from IBM here right now looking at redevelopment strategies for LRT hubs? Because redeveloping around LRT is standard practice all around the world.
We’re already making a mess of the LRT project by not building our brand new stadium on it!
Councillor Wilkinson is a wise councillor. I hope that she will look at the larger business opportunities that would come from LRT on Carling because it’s long enough to support a hundred years of redevelopment.
Carling is our Yonge Street. We need to treat it as such. Since we can’t afford a Subway, LRT is it!
