Trump says U.S. is considering renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America

August 25, 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump says his administration is giving “serious consideration” to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America .

In a Truth Social post on Tuesday morning, the president wrote, “The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

The president’s comments come as the trade deal between the two countries collapsed. Tensions further escalated after Doug Ford told Trump to “kiss my ass” on Monday during a conference in Hamilton after Trump said he would bring 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian automobiles and auto parts. Trump, on the other hand, called the Ontario premier a “flunky” in a social media post.
