Ottawa Now - How does Canada hit back against America?

August 25, 2026

Just days after trade negotiations with the United States fell apart, Prime Minister Carney is reiterating that the U.S. deal on the table would not have benefited Canadians. In a Truth Social post on Monday morning, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to increase tariffs on all cars and trucks to 50 percent, effective New Year’s Day. Ontario Premier Doug Ford addressed Trump’s threats on The Morning Rush with Bill Carroll with some strong words of his own: ‘Kiss my ass’. So as the war of words carries on, it does raise an important question. How should we react? What is the best way to react? After all, Canada’s economy is roughly one-tenth the size of America’s. We have a GDP of roughly $2.5 trillion, but that is pennies compared to America’s $28 trillion. John Boscariol is a Partner for the International Trade and Investment Law Group. He joins guest host Chris Holski on Ottawa Now.
