Residents in the riding of Lethbridge-West will be heading to the polls a week before Christmas to cast their ballot in a provincial by-election.Premier Danielle Smith’s government announced Wednesday the vote will take place Dec. 18 to fill the vacancy that opened up when NDP member Shannon Phillips resigned July 1.The NDP candidate is Rob Miyashiro while the United Conservative banner will be carried by John Middleton-Hope.

Alberta’s information and privacy commissioner says she has significant concerns about two bills tabled by the government earlier this month.The bills amend existing access to information and privacy rules, and were touted by ministers as being the strictest privacy regulations in Canada.But Diane McLeod, Alberta’s independent privacy and information commissioner, says the government would create legislative holes if the bills are approved.

A former police officer involved in the violent arrest of an Ottawa man who later died in hospital told a coroner’s inquest that he was traumatized by the incident and worried about his own safety at the time.The inquest into the July 2016 death of 38-year-old Abdirahman Abdi began earlier this week, with witnesses testifying Wednesday.Abdi died after police responded to a 911 call reporting that a man was groping women outside a coffee shop in Ottawa’s Hintonburg neighbourhood. The inquest has heard that Abdi appeared to be in a mental health crisis at the time.
