Most people don’t stand up to bullying which is why we see kids committing suicide. It takes a very strong and grounded person to be able to withstand direct personal attacks. Part of the problem is that once an accusation has been made, it’s very hard to dispel. Others may believe it and then rumors begin and spread.
In today’s world it’s akin to gossiping in the middle ages. In Medieval England gossiping women were forced to wear a Scold’s Bridle if convicted of gossiping or quarreling. Not to say that men don’t do it as well. A Scold’s Bridle Is a metal mask that prevents someone from talking. It also has a bell on top to attract more attention. Essentially, it’s a tool used to inflict equal humiliation on a gossiper.
Whether its word of mouth gossip or cyber bullying, if you intentionally spread malicious lies about someone or slander someone through personal attacks on their character, you should be punished.
