This could have all been avoided if the City had conducted proper public consultations at the very beginning. An honest approach is always the best. I really don't understand what City Hall is so afraid of. Engaging the public on an ongoing basis is what government is supposed to do.
I hope city councillors understand that when less than 50% of potential voters actually vote, as was the case in the 2010 municipal election, city council does not have the mandate to make arbitrary decisions without properly consulting the public, especially on issues that were never discussed or debated during the election campaign, like the casino issue.
If they can't be trusted to do the right thing, as is the case now at City Hall, then we need a new governance model to ensure they do - one that engages the public in every decision at City Hall that affects us. Only then can we be sure that city politicians and bureaucrats have what they need to make the right decisions.
