The Ontario PC Government recently introduced Bill 66, the Restoring Ontario’s Competitiveness Act. Part of the Bill would allow municipalities to create “open for business” zoning bylaws. The bill will allow municipalities to bypass numerous existing pieces of legislation including The Greenbelt Act, which protects a large swath of land in southern Ontario, extending from Niagara to the Bruce Peninsula. Besides preserving irreplaceable undeveloped land, the Greenbelt Act has helped stop the encroachment of housing and commercial development on our unique Niagara wine producing land.
Has Mr. Ford forgotten his pledge that a “Tory government would maintain the Greenbelt in its entirety and enshrine that pledge in the party's soon-to-be-released platform” (CTV News, May 1, 2018)?
