Ottawa Now - Should politicians face punishment for telling a lie?
They say a little white lie never hurt anyone, but they also say honesty is the best policy. Over in Wales, they are embracing the latter phrase in the political arena. And they are trying to turn this mantra into law to prove that point, making it illegal for any politician to lie if it gains enough approval. In fact, if any member of office is caught lying, they could potentially lose their seat. Meantime, a Canadian petition with over 44,000 signatures is calling for today’s MPs to be held accountable if they say something false. Fed Sanchez, a Toronto-based doctor and the man who initiated this petition, explains what triggered the idea. Then, we hear from Liberal MP Karim Bardeesy, who plans to present this motion to the House of Commons.
