Gananoque budget 'deemed passed' after deadline to amend expires under 'strong mayor' law

The budget of Gananoque was "deemed to have passed" without a vote by council earlier this month, surprising councillors who were unaware of a new 30-day deadline to make amendments — a rule introduced under Ontario’s controversial "strong mayor" legislation.
Under the new tax subclass targeting derelict commercial buildings, owners could see a jump in their taxes by up to 57 per cent if they don't fix up or demolish them.
