Despite some progress, last‑minute U.S. demands were deemed unfair and uneconomic, leading Canada to suspend negotiations and recall its negotiators. In response to an imminent 50% U.S. tariff on $28 billion of Canadian goods, Canada will match those tariffs to protect workers and businesses. Additional support measures will follow, building on $25 billion already provided.
The Prime Minister emphasize that Canada’s broader economic strategy is succeeding: major infrastructure investments nearing $500 billion, expanding access to global markets, rising foreign direct investment, and strong economic growth projected to be among the fastest in the G7. He reaffirms that Canada will set its own economic course and will not allow any other nation to determine its future.
