Invitation to Do The Math on Climate Change
Dear Ottawa residents,
“Do The Math” is a 42-minute documentary about the rising movement in the United States to change the terrifying arithmetic of the climate crisis. This important film follows Bill McKibben, as he depicts the reality of climate change and launches the 'Fossil Free Divestment Campaign’. Although set in the United States, the facts that the film outlines apply globally -- making it imperative for all of us to watch.
Environmental degradation is the single greatest issue of our time. Yet, governments stand paralyzed, unwilling to act. David Rhynas, representing Climate Reality Canada, will join us prior to the screening and provide a 15 minute talk about climate change.
A lot has happened since the documentary movie “An Inconvenient Truth” and there are some compelling updates on the latest science and solutions. This talk identifies steps that our society could readily undertake towards a more sustainable world. The screening will be followed by a Q&A.
Climate change! We hear the term almost every day, and those of us paying attention can connect the recent natural disasters around the world such as this summer’s floods in Alberta and Hurricane Sandy, directly to climate change. Arguably, climate change can be caused by a number of naturally occurring factors such as variations in solar radiation or by changes in the ocean. However, scientists and undeniable facts, such as the fast melting poles, tell us a different story.
Our rapidly warming planet is a direct result of greenhouses gases emitted by human indulgence. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the primary greenhouse gas produced by human activities and was recently measured at 400 parts per million, the highest level in nearly 3 million years. This is just the beginning. The time to act was yesterday.
350.org, founded by U.S. author Bill McKibben, is building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis. To preserve our planet, scientists tell us we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 400 parts to below 350, hence the name.
On Tuesday, July 23rd at 7:00 PM, please join us at the Wellington Room of the Hintonburg Community Centre for a free screening of the documentary “Do The Math” as well as a talk by our special guest David Rhynas titled 'Climate Change at a Crossroads'.
To sign up, go to - http://local.350.org/events/335/ If you are passionate about the environment or want to join the 350.org movement, please email us at ottawa350@gmail.com or on Twitter @350Ottawa. Together we can solve this crisis and leave a little more of this precious planet to our future generations.
“There is a tendency at every important but difficult crossroad to pretend that it's not really there.”
― Bill McKibben, The End of Nature
