About the author

Mimi Lee is one of the main organizers of Torontonian HongKongers Action Group , which the group has been organizing different events since June last year in Toronto to raise awareness and support the current pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong started by the extradition to China bill fiasco. Since 2012, she has been awakened by the Moral and National Education controversy in Hong Kong, and realized that Hong Kong has been going downhill for so many years since the handover in 1997. After the Umbrella Movement in 2014, it has encouraged her to do a lot more than just supporting Hong Kong, but actually involved in different initiatives raising awareness of the situation of Hong Kong.

Elizabeth May responds to human rights issues in Hong Kong

October 15, 2020

In response to the ongoing human rights issues in Hong Kong over the last year and half and counting, the Torontonian HongKongers Action Group, together with a number of Canadian civic groups had drafted a joint statement regarding sanctioning of Chinese and Hong Kong officials who had been contributing to the erosion of freedom of speech and expression, as well as human rights in Hong Kong.

We urge the Government of Canada to offer a “Safe Harbour Program” with an expedited process to grant protection and permanent residency status to Hongkongers at risk.

We are asking influential liked-minded individuals to sign their names to show support on this. As a party leadership candidate, I feel that you might want to take this opportunity to show our fellow members, as well as our current and potential supporters that we stand with the global values of safeguarding human rights.

Elizabeth May of the Green Party of Canada spoke at the national press conference about the Greens stand with Hong Kong and urged the Canadian government needs to do more in response to the abuse of human rights in Hong Kong and Beijing’s willingness on breaking the original agreement in places with the UK.

She also reminded us that Annamie Paul, the new Green Party leader, is a human rights lawyer who worked at the international criminal court.

Please see the joint statement below in PDF.
