Re: Carling Light-Rail Option Dumped

April 22, 2013

I made this comment earlier today on The Bulldog blog regarding the City of Ottawa's decision to not pursue a Carling Ave. option for LRT.

At what cost? How much will it cost to build a tunnel under Richmond Rd? Without a proper business plan for each option there is no way to compare them. Its clear, however, the City wants the LRT line to run as close to Richmond Rd. as possible. Why is that?

I will always believe Carling Ave. is the better choice because of the economic upside to redeveloping the entire street over the course of the next century. Carling would undergo a renewal that almost everyone welcomes while achieving all of the City’s objectives and more. I don’t accept their reasons for refusing Carling because I’ve seen other cities successfully run rail down main streets without experiencing traffic problems. Timing lights is no problem with today's technology.

This is a real shame.
