I am writing a quick note to say that I support segregated bike lanes in Ottawa. I believe they are necessary in order to ensure the safety of cyclists in Ottawa while also promoting a healthy lifestyle and culture for all.
Having lived in Europe and other major Canadian cities, I know segregated lanes work well. I believe segregated lanes are the only way to provide a completely safe cycling experience for people of all ages.
The issue many residents have with the segregated bike lanes on Laurier Ave. is that they exist on both sides of the street, thus eliminating all street parking. Since one extreme is no better than another, I recommend the City look for a compromise by limiting the segregated bike lanes to one side of the street only, because if this project is cancelled altogether, it will be very difficult for the City to move in this direction again... something that I believe will prevent the City from reaching its objective of providing better and safer multi-modal transportation options for all its residents.
Sincerely,
James O'Grady
