Ottawa - “Why does Yasir Naqvi want you to forget that he ever served as the President of the Ontario Liberal Party?” asks Rob Dekker, the Ontario Progressive Conservative candidate for Ottawa Centre. “Why is Yasir Naqvi trying to hide in plain sight? What’s Yasir Naqvi trying to avoid?”
From 2009 to 2012 the best-connected Liberal insider in the province served as President of the Ontario Liberal Party. Mr. Naqvi spent years cultivating relationships in order to win that leadership role within the Party.
“But you won’t find that fact on Mr. Naqvi political website,” said Mr. Dekker. ‘It’s missing. As if it never happened. Former President of the Party? Not even a hint.” “Why?” asks Mr. Dekker.
Because that fact ties Yasir Naqvi to the reckless political decision-making that was the source of the gas plant scandal. Like Premier Wynne, Mr. Naqvi wants to avoid accountability.
As President of the Party, Yasir Naqvi sat at the top of the political machine that reported to Dalton McGuinty in the lead up to, and during, the 2011 provincial election. He was a key member of the campaign team. His responsibility, as President, was to get Liberals elected in every riding in the province – including the five gas plant ridings.
As the President of the Party he had to have asked the question: How do we win those gas plant ridings? A billion dollars later, we know what the answer was.
Only a judicial inquiry can get to the bottom of the gas plant scandal. Mr. Naqvi needs to testify before that inquiry.
“The former President of the Ontario Liberal Party needs to tell a judicial inquiry what he knows about the decisions that led to the squandering of a billion dollars in taxpayer’s money for the benefit of the Ontario Liberal Party,” said Mr. Dekker
