Podcast: NAFTA

Today on Unpublished Cafe we talk about how the North American Free Trade Agreement has been a political football for many politicians, in particular US presidents, as we have seen since Donald Trump entered the presidential race in 2015.  While he decries the deal as unfair to Americans, the agreement has accomplished it's seven goals.

To get an idea how much this means to all North Americans, in 2016, trilateral trade reached nearly USD $1 trillion – more than a three-fold increase since 1993. 400,000 people and over $2.4 billion worth of goods and services cross the Canada–U.S. border daily. Since 1993, Mexico-Canada merchandise trade grew nine-fold, while services trade has increased six-fold.

This episode of Unpublished Cafe includes talks with Scott Sinclair a senior economics researcher with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. We talk with Matthew Stewart, Director of National Forecasting, at the Conference Board of Canada who authored a report on the fall out.  And we also go south of the border to talk with Jamie McInerney, Executive Director of the Trade Leadership Coalition.
