The House of Commons has returned for the Winter Session, and Prime Minister Carney kicked things off with a big announcement on Monday. His government is launching a GST credit to help Canadians manage the rising cost of groceries. The quarterly payments will see an increase of 25 percent over the next 5 years, and will also include a one-time top-up of 50 percent this June. We dig deeper with Mike Von Massow, a food economist at the University of Guelph. Later in the program, we check in with Carissa Davis, who is the Community Advocacy Coordinator for the Parkdale Food Centre. But first, we bring you up to speed on today’s top headlines.
Conservative delegates’ resounding show of support for Pierre Poilievre’s leadership in Calgary is more interesting than a more tentative vote would have been. The way people talk about Poilievre in Ottawa and Toronto, including a lot of long-time Conservatives, suggests they think he’s trying to be like Prime Minister Mark Carney, and he’s bad at it. The weekend’s events in Calgary suggest Poilievre’s trying to be different from Carney, and that the party thinks he’s good at it.
