Trump critic says he has 'left U.S. for Montreal,' shares a photo from Mont-Tremblant: 'No corruption here'

Prominent Trump critic Brian Krassenstein said he has “left the U.S. for Montreal.”

“No corruption here,” Krassenstein said while announcing his move on X on Monday alongside a photo that eagle-eyed X users pointed was taken in Mont-Tremblant.

The March 16 post has already been viewed more than 1.5 million times in the first day. But response has been widely varied, from Canadians and Quebecers welcoming the Florida resident to our country, to those pointing out that this is hardly a corruption-free zone.

Anthony Koch, a Conservative strategist who lives in Montreal and has written for National Post , responded to the post with: “Montréal, a city historically known for its lack of corruption.”

Meanwhile, Harley Finkelstein, Montreal native and president of Shopify, replied: “My favorite city. Welcome.” He followed that up with a second one-word response — “Tremblant” — and a downhill skiing emoji, presumably to point out that the image seems to have been taken in Mont-Tremblant, a popular ski destination more than 100 kms north of Montreal.

And Canadian economist Jean-Marc Léger, founding president of the market research firm Léger, replied: “Bienvenue chez nous.” (Welcome to our place.)

One X user named Roddy seemed to sum up many responses when he wrote: “While not entirely accurate, welcome all the same.”

Krassenstein and his twin brother Ed gained prominence on Twitter (now X) with their frequent rebukes of Trump during his first presidency. When Trump blocked them, they launched a lawsuit arguing that the president’s Twitter account functioned as a public forum and that blocking them violated their First Amendment rights, after which they and other critics were unblocked.

The following year the Krassensteins were suspended from Twitter for operating fake accounts. They denied these allegations, and in December of 2022 their accounts were reinstated.
