Ottawa Now - Carney pauses federal fuel tax, but how much relief will it actually provide?

April 14, 2026

Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to temporarily suspend a federal tax on gas, diesel, and aviation fuel. The announcement comes less than 24 hours after the Carney Liberals secured a majority government, winning all 3 byelections that were held on Monday night. According to the federal government, the tax suspension is expected to reduce the price tag by 10 cents-per-litre on regular gas and 4 cents-per-litre on diesel – starting next Monday and running until September 7th. However, global oil prices have remained volatile since the Iran War started over a month ago. And during that time, certain regions have seen gas prices climb by nearly 40 cents-per-litre. Will this kind gesture from the Prime Minister alleviate financial pressures from Canadian family budgets? Is it arriving too late? Kristy Cameron chats with Colin Mang, an economist at McMaster University, on today’s Ottawa Now.
