Ottawa Now - Local tourism organizations call on Alto to install rail station in Downtown Ottawa

April 27, 2026

Ottawa’s tourism organizations want to see high-speed rail bring passengers to a station in the city’s Downtown Core, arguing that it ‘deserves to arrive in the heart of Ottawa’. The Crown corporation Alto has been tasked with building high-speed rail between Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City. The main voices behind the Ottawa Board of Trade, Invest Ottawa, and Ottawa Tourism have penned a letter to Alto President Martin Imbleau about the idea. However, critics say there are bigger fish to fry. Rideau-Vanier councillor Stephanie Plante is raising numerous concerns about the baggage that comes with building in Downtown areas, referencing that infamous sinkhole that swallowed up Rideau Street 10 years ago. Joining us on today’s Ottawa Now with her passionate reply is Sueling Ching, the President and CEO of the Ottawa Board of Trade.
