Three children recognized at the 9-1-1 Children’s Achievement Awards

May 4, 2026

This morning, Dana, Kailey, and Reem were recognized through the 9-1-1 Children’s Achievement Awards for their bravery and quick actions. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe together with Councillor Riley Brockington, Chair of the Emergency Preparedness and Protective Services Committee, presented them with awards for their courage.

The award, held in partnership with Bell, recognizes youth ages 12 and under who effectively used 9-1-1 in a crisis and helped others.

This year’s event falls on Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 3 to 9. Check out our Are You Ready? workbook and learn how you can be prepared for an emergency.

Quotes

“Meeting Dana, Kailey, and Reem this morning was incredibly moving. In an incredibly difficult moment, they made the right call and helped someone in need. That takes real courage, and it says a lot about the kind of young people we have in our city. Their actions show just how powerful it is to know what to do in an emergency and I’m very proud of them.”

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe

“Knowing how to call 9-1-1 and understanding when to call 9-1-1 are two different, but important actions. A big thank you to Dana, Kailey, and Reem  for their bravery and to our dedicated first responders who work tirelessly to save lives and handle tough situations every single day.”

Councillor Riley Brockington, Chair of the Emergency Preparedness and Protective Services Committee
