Police investigating shooting aimed at three people outside Toronto area synagogue

May 8, 2026

Three people standing outside a Toronto area synagogue have been shot at with a replica firearm, according to the Toronto Police Service.

In an X post made on Friday morning, police said the shooting occurred in the Bathurst Street and Highway 401 area around 11 p.m. Thursday night.

“Last night, three people were standing outside of Chasidei Bobov synagogue and were shot at with a replica firearm from a vehicle. One person was struck and suffered minor injuries,” Viktor Sarudi, TPS media relations officer told National Post in an email Friday morning. “They were not taken to hospital.”

Sarudi says the TPS doesn’t have information to share on the suspect vehicle or type of replica firearm at this time but hopes to provide further information later today. “Officers are currently investigating in the area, speaking to witnesses, and seeking video footage. Anyone with information should contact police.”

He added that this is “ being investigated as a suspected hate-motivated offence.”

Replica guns can include pellet guns, according to the RCMP.

The incident comes in the wake of the arrest of an 18-year-old man in connection with two shooting of synagogues in Toronto and Vaughan, Ont., in March.

It’s not clear whether this latest shooting is linked to a similar incident on April 30, reported on by National Post, when three Jewish people in North York were shot at with a replica firearm. Police have not linked the two incidents.

Toronto writer and educator Aviva Klompas asked in an X post on Friday morning: “How long before shooting ‘replica guns’ at Jews turns into shooting real guns at Jews?”

In the weeks after Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, universities worldwide came under close scrutiny. Several issued statements in condemnation and expressing sympathy for the victims of violence in Israel and (less frequently) Gaza. Many of them were soon accused of failing to take a strong enough stand, either in support of Israel or denouncing it. In the December 2023 United States congressional hearing on antisemitism in colleges, then president of Harvard Claudine Gay was taken to task for the university’s refusal to fly the Israeli flag on campus following October 7 even though...

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government is playing legal hardball with First Nations fighting for clean drinking water — and First Nations are fighting back. Interviews and hundreds of pages of court documents reviewed by the Investigative Journalism Bureau (IJB) reveal this marked shift primarily on three fronts. In Alberta, Canada pulled the plug on settlement talks involving four nations. In Ontario, it is using a legal tactic against another that appears to contradict its own guidelines for government lawyers. And nationally, it is appealing a summary judgment that handed...
