I moved to Ottawa in 1981 as a result of a Public Service promotion. I bought a house in Barrhaven, and for the next 12 years, rode the bus to get back and forth to work. In that time, I worked in various departments, at Elgin & Slater, at NDHQ on Mackenzie Bridge, at Tunney’s Pasture, and at Rideau Hall. During that entire period, I walked about 200 metres to the end of my street, got on a bus, and arrived at work in less than 45 minutes. With the exception of Rideau Hall, I used one bus for the entire trip. While the bus might not have always been on time, it was pretty dependable. I recall that one year, OC Transpo won an award for having the best mass transit system that was based solely on buses. Read More
