Ontario man arrested for allegedly making antisemitic online death threats

A Clarington, Ont., man has been arrested by the Durham Regional Police Service ‘s Hate Crime and Extremism Unit for allegedly making several antisemitic online death threats.

Unit investigators were contacted by the Vancouver Police Department with information related to several antisemitic death threats made via the social media platform X.

“VPD was made aware of online threats made on the social media platform ‘X’ on May 20, 2026,” VPD Constable Megan Lui wrote National Post in an email on Tueasday afternoon. “Officers investigated and noted that the user was in Clarington, Ontario.”

VPD then alerted its “partners in Durham Regional Police who continued the investigation,” wrote Lui.

David Edward Smith, 58, was identified by the investigators who subsequently executed a search warrant at his residence on Tuesday. “The suspect was located inside the residence and taken into custody without incident,” says the DPRS release .

After being charged with uttering death threats, Smith was released on an undertaking.

Police have asked for anyone with information about this incident to contact the Hate Crime and Extremism Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5800.
