Toronto headquarters of armoured vehicle maker INKAS hit by gunfire
A company that builds bulletproof cars had its Toronto headquarters shot at early Tuesday morning.
Toronto police responded to reports of gunshots heard near Finch Avenue West and Weston Road at 1:53 a.m., the Toronto Police Service said in a post on X. A business was damaged and officers located evidence of gunfire. Nobody was hurt, and police said they had no suspect description.
Police did not identify the target of the gunfire, but INKAS Armoured Vehicle Manufacturing confirmed it was the company that was shot at. “Earlier this morning, our Toronto headquarters was struck by gunfire in a serious incident that caused damage to the facility,” chief security officer Andy Ellis said in a statement Tuesday. No employees, visitors or members of the public were injured, he wrote, and the building remains operational. The company builds armoured transport vehicles, executive SUVs, luxury sedans, limousines and special purpose vehicles for banks, law enforcement agencies, corporate clients and individuals, according to its website.
The shooting followed other recent incidents in Toronto. Evidence of gunfire was found early Sunday at two locations of Kiva’s, a Jewish-owned bakery. The area near the U.S. Consulate downtown came under fire the following day, the second time in four months.
“The incident is being investigated by the Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force,” Toronto police media relations manager Nadine Ramadan said in an email. “Any connections to other incidents will form part of the investigation. We have no further information to share.”
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs said in a post on X that the gunfire targeted the manufacturer, which it said provides crucial technology to protect Ukrainians. The shooting came at a time of rising politically motivated violence aimed at harming and intimidating Canadians, the organization said, and it called on governments to get tough on terrorism.
Police have not said whether the shooting was targeted. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
