Ottawa Now - MapQuest rejects Trump's 'Lake America' name change, vowing to keep the Lake Ontario label on its maps

For the past 18 months, Canada and the United States have been locked in a trade war. And thanks to recent actions from the White House, we might have a map war on our hands as well. Last Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order, changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America. Ontario’s Premier clapped back in Grimsby days later, unveiling a Lake Ontario sign on the Canadian shoreline. So what do the online maps say? Well, when you take a gander at Google Maps, an American-based company, Trump’s alteration to the Great Lake is on full display. But not on MapQuest! General Manager Doug Berger says the company is rejecting Trump’s order, taking to social media with a picture of Lake Ontario and the Lake Ontario font. Their message was loud and clear: We’re not changing it. Since that decree, the MapQuest app has seen a surge in downloads, and its usage has skyrocketed above its normal levels. In fact, MapQuest leapfrogged Google Maps to take the No. 1 spot on Apple’s list of Navigation apps. Berger joins Kristy Cameron on Ottawa Now.
