In 2026..still no public washroom strategy

April 7, 2026
Ou es la papiêr?

No where to go

Gotta Go, in life and in death.

I recently travelled to the world's most populus city, Tokyo, Japan. There are more public washrooms on a single block near the Shibuya crossing than there are in all of Ottawa.
And further, if you did find a public washroom in Ottawa, chances are good it would be locked or have no hot water, no heat, dirty, graffittied, no light - worse than an outhouse.
Why, in Ottawa we accept this as public infrastructure is a mystery to me.

Let me make this plain. The way a city and community treats its citizens is the true mark of its character.

Its not about Ottawa Senators, Landsdowne or the market, its not about diversity or bilingualism.

The provision of basic public sanitation is the most fundamental and basic of all civic services.
Are there worries of the expense to clean and maintain them? Folks you are going to pay in so many other ways if you do not provide basic rest room service.
Some cities charge a small fee, others in Japan provide clean, graffitti free wahrooms, literally in the middle of nowhere, these have warm, hot and cold water with electronically controlled bidets.

What are we, mouth breathers?

Anyone that choses to ignore this problem in Ottawa deserves the stockade, forget about re election.

Dont know if you realized were broke AF.
Public washrooms arent a real issue today.
Japan is one of the most advanced societies on earth, they are richer than us.
You say In Japan like were supposed to be ahead of them, or that they care for their people more than we do(which is true they do, in everyway possible) but thats because they afford it.
We are not the same. They are far financially and economically ahead of us.
Do you realize how much construction has been done in Canada in the last twenty years? You'd think you lived in a forest or a prarie depending where you lived (in city) before then.
Itd be a waste of natural and essential resources to build bathrooms on top of bathrooms.
Buy a drink, Get a Seat on a Toilet.

If pissing on the ground is a real civil debate when you have your own bathroom and plenty more then you need to get your priorities in check. It would probably end up costing the city millions so the overly fed working class can shit at a parkette, when millions can go to somebody in need. Like low income and accessible housing *echos* housing housing housing housing housing

It’s a huge issue and so easily solved. The entire world figured this out centuries ago. But, I’ll say this straight up, as a 60 year with gut issues, this is why I won’t take public transit in Ottawa.

At today's Finance and economic development meeting it was publically acknowledged that people...Ottawa citizens are shitting and pissing...it says defecating and urinating, across the street from a busy restaurant in Center town. Bank at Sommerset.

Two self cleaning washrooms were approved in 2025...what happened? Staff spent the money instead planning to build...one.

The date for action? 2028. Fire them all!
