Typically, the monthly patio permit rental rate is $16.49 per square metre. If approved, that extra expense gets wiped away during the warmest months of 2026, which would do a world of good for Downtown business owners. How much relief would this provide? Ottawa's public health unit says it expects its funding shortfall to more than triple from $4.5 million in 2027 to $14.7 million by 2036, and it says dwindling contributions from the province aren't helping.
