New pilot program will help local businesses improve accessibility

September 2, 2026
Local businesses can now apply to receive free temporary accessibility ramps.

As directed by Council in June, the Corporate Accessibility Office is launching a pilot program in partnership with the StopGap Foundation to provide free temporary ramps to local businesses.

These lightweight, brightly coloured temporary ramps help businesses overcome single-step barriers, such as a step at the entrance to a shop. Accessibility ramps support by making it easier for people who use mobility devices, have limited mobility or use strollers to access local businesses. They also raise public awareness about accessibility and help businesses welcome more customers.

Who can apply?

This program is open to any local business that meets the following criteria:

  • Located within the City of Ottawa boundary
  • Have a single-step entrance (typically between 2 and 7 inches in height) at the main public entrance
  • Have adequate space to safely position and use the ramp
  • Have confirmation that the property owner approves use of the ramp if the property is leased
  • Have proof of $2 million minimum liability insurance, and
  • Agree to sign a participation agreement for the use of the ramp between StopGap Foundation and the business owner

Applications for this program are now open.

Funding for free ramps is limited, and eligible businesses will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to review by the Corporate Accessibility Office.

And as students head back to the classroom, they are being greeted with a classroom cellphone ban. When a lecture is going on, the phone stays off, and that’s a far cry from the Summer screentime that students were used to. So in today’s edition of The Check-Up with Dr. Alykhan Abdulla, tech addiction...

We are on the precipice of an A.I. centre boom, as the City of Ottawa is drafting its policy on data centres. There's a new wave of facilities coming to power it, and now various towns are being left to deal with it. Last Wednesday, Ottawa City Council passed a motion, asking City Staff to create a framework for assessing data centres. The motion was put forward by Rideau-Vanier councillor Stéphanie Plante and tasks staff with developing a framework through which data centres can be assessed, based on their size and expected impact. Plante joins Kristy Cameron in Hour 1. Meantime...
