Media Advisory: Press Conference with Filmmaker Hideto Sonoda – March 12

March 10, 2026

Toronto, March 11, 2026 — Art has long been a way for people to express experiences that are difficult to articulate, especially during periods of political upheaval when entire communities face trauma at the same time.

For decades, this has been the reality for many minority groups within China. It is now the lived experience of Hong Kong’s new diaspora, and it may become a future concern for the people of Taiwan.

With courage and persistence — and despite ongoing opposition, including a recent demand letter from a Texas‑based U.S. lawyer (attached) — filmmaker Hideto Sonoda has completed LOVE SUPREME: Dialogue with Xi Jinping. The film traces the life and rise of China’s President through a dreamlike narrative that allows audiences to witness key moments without the filters of state propaganda.

Press release

The timing of this premiere is significant. China is preparing to pass a new “ethnic unity” law that will sharply restrict the ability of minority communities to express themselves. As reported by the BBC, the law “lowers the status of other languages at the expense of Mandarin; encourages intermarriage between the dominant Han Chinese and other ethnicities; requires parents to educate and guide minors to love the Chinese Communist Party; and prohibits any acts seen as damaging to ‘ethnic unity’.”

Ahead of the world premiere of LOVE SUPREME: Dialogue with Xi Jinping on March 14 at Innis Hall, University of Toronto, Hideto Sonoda will hold a press conference for Toronto media on Thursday, March 12.

All media are invited.
