MP Scott Reid Will Not Affirm Support for Access to Reproductive Health

July 18, 2022

With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, I reached out to my MP Scott Reid to find out if he supported access to abortion and reproductive services. His response was not reassuring. This is my reply.

Mr. Reid,

Thank you for your reply. I agree that it is better to judge a politician by their past actions. This is why female constituents in your riding are just as concerned as they were the last time you put their rights on a mailer for constituency referendum #6.

They are also as concerned as the LGBTQ+ community was when you put their right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment in the form of conversion therapy on your mailer just last year as constituency referendum #11. Or referendum #5 which led you to vote against same-sex marriage. These referendums demonstrate a disturbing pattern of apathy when it comes to the rights of certain groups.

Your constituents need reassurance now more than ever that you will protect all our rights, not just the rights of the ruling class. Your reply does not provide that reassurance. I am disappointed you will not affirm your support for the rights of all your constituents or that this affirmation is dependent on whoever decides to respond to your mailer.

I hope you will reconsider your position and affirm your support for access to vital health care and reproductive services for all Canadians.

Thanks,

Kelley Denham
