Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation blocks Alberta separatist petition in court

The Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation is challenging Alberta’s separatist petition in court, saying separation from Canada cannot proceed without First Nation consent under Treaty No. 8.

In a ruling dated Monday, Justice Eleni Yiannakis said the plaintiffs met the conditions for a full trial and that compensatory refunds would be allowed if they win the case.
