Ottawa Now - Federal public servants officially switch to 4-day, in-office model as unions still question the feds' messaging

July 6, 2026

Effective today, federal public servants are expected to be at the office for at least 4 days per week. And as OC Transpo adjusts their schedule to adapt to the growing commuter crowds, questions continue to swirl as to whether the returning employees will have enough workspaces to complete their tasks. In recent weeks, CTV Ottawa reached out to the largest federal departments to get a gauge of how things are looking. Eleven of them said there was enough space to accommodate the 4-day grind. However, the Canadian Association of Professional Employees is calling on Prime Minister Carney to explain the 4-day return-to-office mandate, arguing that the justifications they have been told don’t add up. CAPE President Nathan Prier joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
