Amid wider statue debate, Gatineau quietly reinstalls monument to Samuel de Champlain

The City of Gatineau has quietly reinstalled a statue of 17th-century explorer and Quebec City founder Samuel de Champlain, nearly a decade after it was removed for maintenance.
In a social media post, the Centre islamique de l’Outaouais — which includes schools and mosques around the western Quebec city — condemned what it called a hateful campaign involving graffiti, threats and harassment.
