COVID-19: Reopening the Border
Posted on September 12, 2020
Polling in Canada consistently shows between 80 and 90 percent of Canadians want the Canada – US border to remain closed due to America’s lack of control over the coronavirus. How long will Canadians get their way?
The longest undefended border in the world has been closed to all but essential travel since March 21st. 29 US Congress members have written the Canadian Government to start making a plan for when the border can open safely. Almost $630 billion annually is traded between the two. The fear is palpable in Canadians as they see the pandemic out of control having claimed more than 190 thousand lives.
Our two economies are intertwined and with both facing stark economic futures, there are people who want to see business resume to offset the impact. While business continues to be done between the two countries, it is no where near where it was, nor helping business grow.
