Japanese filmmaker receives legal demand letter against his film LOVE SUPREME: Dialog with Xi Jinping World Premiere in Toronto

March 6, 2026

Japanese filmmaker Hideto Sonoda received a demand letter yesterday from a Texas‑based U.S. lawyer regarding the world premiere of his film LOVE SUPREME: Dialog with Xi Jinping, screening March 14 at Innis Hall, University of Toronto. The lawyer’s client remains anonymous, and the purpose of the complaint is unclear.

Having seen the film, I can say that LOVE SUPREME is a work created in solidarity with cultural, religious, and political minorities in China — a film that amplifies voices often silenced. So the question becomes: who believes they are being harmed by a fictional film made on behalf of marginalized communities?

Please comment below and get your tickets for the hottest premiere in Toronto on March 14, 7pm at Innis Hall!!
